School Wellness Policy

The school environment is critical in supporting the health and wellbeing of students. Children spend much of their young lives in schools and is a place where they eat many of their meals and where they engage in many of their minutes of physical activity, through PE, recess, and organized sports or other school based physical activity. A healthy school environment supports health, well-being, and academic achievement of students, as well as helping students develop healthy habits for a lifetime (J School Health; 2015, 85: 729-739).

The Local School Wellness Policy requirement, mandated by the United States Department of Agriculture, requires the development and implementation of a school wellness policy to establish a school environment that promotes students’ health, well-being, and ability to learn by supporting healthy eating and physical activity.

CalFresh Healthy Living, UCCE teams support schools in the development, assessment, and strengthening of wellness policies, as well as through policy implementation. This can involve a variety of activities, including direct nutrition education for youth and families, support for improved nutrition standards, Smarter Lunchrooms Movement, promoting active time in recess, classroom physical activity breaks, and more.
